What is a Carotid Doppler Ultrasound?

Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the carotid arteries—large arteries (approximately 5–6 mm in diameter) located on both sides of the neck. These arteries are responsible for supplying blood to the brain.

This examination helps assess:

• Blood flow to the brain

• Presence of plaque (fatty deposits or calcification) within the arteries

• Thickness of the arterial wall

• Blood flow velocity

Why is this test important?

If the carotid arteries become thickened, narrowed, or blocked due to plaque buildup, blood flow to the brain may be reduced or completely obstructed.
